Evan Weiss was born and raised near Seattle, Washington. After exploring composition at an early age, he traveled cross-country to study jazz at The University of North Texas. During his stay, he had the opportunity to write, perform, and travel with the Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band. This 19-piece group served as the perfect setting to experiment with orchestration and recording for large ensemble, and it paved the way for his later successes as a composer. Evan’s most recent chamber music release, Math or Magic includes lushly orchestrated soundscapes and cinematic themes for strings and woodwinds. The music on this provocative recording explores the relationship between the intricate and the simple; the balance between complex compositional elements and vibrant, listenable melodies. Evan currently tours with The Polyphonic Spree, the Funky Knuckles, and 2014 Grammy winners Snarky Puppy in addtion to performing, recording, and producing for bands in Dallas and worldwide. He has brought his music all around The United States, and has performed in Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Austria, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Japan, China, Hong Kong, and Australia.

Evan Weiss on his philosophy of music:

“The most powerful compositions stretch far beyond the abilities of the individual player. It is not the composer’s job to create the music, but rather to enable the members of his ensemble to perform. This distinction is especially prevalent in jazz because the composer of a given piece is often also a performer and an improviser. In improvised music, the writer must relinquish control to his fellow players for a piece to reach its full potential. That element of risk is the primary reason that I am a musician."
